I Got my Shot

May 14, 2021

Recently, I received an email from Sobey’s Grocery stores in response to my request to be waitlisted for the vaccine.. They said, I was eligible for the COVID vaccine, for the AstraZeneca vaccine. Finally!!

AZ Vacvine

I went & signed up. It turns out the closest location for the shot was in the city a Gerrard & Vic Park. I’m sure there’s not a lot of you familiar with the geography of Toronto but from my home it is approximately 50 km or just over 30 miles ( just under an hour away) to that specific grocery store for my shot. But I was going to be going into Scarborough (East Toronto) anyways because of Lilly’s surgery. I figured I’d would kill two birds with one stone.

My Shot, Thursday

So my appointment was on Thursday, at 11:30am. It was super quick. By the time my brain registered the sensation of the needle, she was already putting it syringe into the sharps bin.So, even if you don’t like needles, it’s not that bad. I stayed the required 15 minutes. No reaction initially other than some moderate nausea.

Waiting n the cubical for the pharmacist to give me my shot

The nausea stayed with me for the day. I was a little tired afterwards & had a short nap which helped me feel a little better. Even went for walk with my sister in the evening.

My Reactions – That Night

By 2:00am the nausea was worse, so much so that I had an empty bucket beside my bed, just in case.

Shortly after that I noticed I was cold. I was eventually shivering despite pj’s and warm bedding. My temperature at this time was 38 & change in Celcius .

My arm was sore, but most people have that reaction. My fibro was triggered and my pain was climbing everywhere. At worst I’d say 5/10.

By 5:00 this morning my body had switched from shivering to sweating. I was also having a headache kick in. I took some Tylenol with codeine and was finally able to get back to sleep.

My Reactions – Next Day, Friday

I was abruptly woken up by my Mom at 10:30am for a temperature check. It was 36.8, completely normal. After checking Lilly & giving her meds (see her surgical post if you are interested), I went back to bed. Fortunately in the morning, the body wide pain had taken a step back and no more shivering or sweating. I did still have the headache, and the nausea but it was not as bad.

As the day wore on I’d flip from chills to overheating, but no temperature. The nausea kept up and I did rush to the bathroom with dry heaves. The body-wide aches went back up by bedtime.

My Reactions – Day 2 Post Vaccine, Saturday

Still has ongoing flipping between chills & hot flashes. Left arm still sore.. Ongoing body aches all during the day.. Still nauseous, but not actually vomiting..sent alot of my time resting.

My Reactions – Day 3 Vaccine, Sunday.

Chills & hot flashes completely abated by the evening and the nausea aswell. Still had body-wide aches & pains.

My Reactions – Day 4 & 5, Monday & Tuesday.

I think by this point I was completely finished reacting to the actual vaccine, whoever my fibromyalgia decided to react to the vaccine reaction. Oh so fun. So by the time I woke up on Monday I was in a lovely little fibro flare that has lasted several days. Only thing I accomplished was the opening & closing of my Tuesday Night Cub meeting.

So, by this point my actual immunoreaction to the medication in the vaccine was done, but not the end of this saga of my vaccine.. Read here for more on this story.

Scout Popcorn

April 22, 2021

It’s Baa-aak!!!

Family Movie Night In

Yes. I know. You missed it in the fall, but we have finally started the 2020-2021 Popcorn campaign..

Who: You

What: We have a new supplier of Nut-free, Gluten-free, Premium, Canadian Popcorn products They include popping kernels, Caramel Corn, Belgian Chocolate Drizzled Caramel Corn and Popcorn Seasoning. We also offer bundles of popped kernels in combinations with Cheddar, Butter,. Sweet & Salty,. Dill, Salt & Vinegar, and BBQ Flavours.

Where: http://www.ScoutPopcorn.ca

When: the campaign runs April 15 – June 15 2021

Why: Scouts Canada says it’s to help support Scouting Groups in funding more great adventures and most importantly, you give kids something to look forward to. PThisvfundraisevall.supportd the No Youth Left Behind subsidy program, helping youth facing economic barriers experience the benefits of Scouting..

Why Us: I’m with the 1st & 13th/30th Oshawa Cub packs. 2 weeks after the word shut down in March 2020, the 13th Oshawa started back up again, in a virtual environment. 2 weeks later we were joined by the 1st Oshawa to run the 2 packs together for the remained of the Scouting Year, including a virtual camp in June.

We know this had been hard on the youth and for some of them, Cubs was their only social.interaction with friends outside of their Bubble. Because of that, we continued on through the summer part time including a second virtual camp requested by the youth..

Due to lack of available leadership, in September we amagimated the 21st Oshawa into the 1st & 13th Oshawa Packs.. We have been bouncing between virtual & in-person meetings depending on the government & Scouts Canada restrictions. We also had the 30th merge with the 13th in January..

To run our programs, the youth need supplies for virtual activities, and even some supplies for in-person activities (cuz you never know what we will get flipped in virtual only). So, we have been providing this to the youth with very little funding, as we are not currently braking weekly dues. Every 6 weeks or so, the youth receive Cub Adventure Kits with supplies such as paint, wax, popsicle sticks, rope, first aid supplies, seeds, dirt, building kits for birdhouses, Kub Kars, drink stations & other projects, rocks, origami, Soapstone and snacks.

It is through the support of people like you who purchase the Scouts Canada products like the Scout Popcorn, Scout Coffee & Scout Seeds. And for that I, WE, Thank You.

Note: While the 1st Oshawa is not participating in this fundraiser, you with find the 13th Oshawa Cub Pack listed with our other sections, as well as the 30th Oshawa.

International Women’s Day 2021

March 8, 2021

March 8,1917 – Women gained suffrage in Soviet Russia. March 8 was adopted by the feminist movement circa 1967. The UN began celebrating the day in 1977.

The purpose as I understand it, is to celebrate women. To support and build each other up. To celebrate the progression of equal rights, and gender equality.

In some countries the official flower of Women’s Day is a Yellow Mimosa

The UN’s Theme for International Women’s Day 2021 is “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world”

Slacking

February 21, 2021

I just looked & saw when I posted last.. I didn’t think it was that long ago, but evidently it was..

I’ve been kinda … low…blue… I usually do after the holidays, but it rarely lasts longer… I’m slightly freaked out… I don’t think it’s ever reached March… *AND* I’ve been snacking my feelings away.. not a good way, cuz now my weight has crept up.. & after maintains my second weight-loss goal for several months, I’ve past that reward level.. I need to eat less & exercise more.

Yes, Virginia, You Can Get Heatstroke in the Winter

December 29, 2020
Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus.

Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus.. While he is not a physical.person, but an ideology of a sort, he still exists as the Spirit or intention of Christmas.. And oddly enough so does heatstroke in the winter, the day after Christmas. Neither is a myth.

On Boxing Day (December 26th here in Canada) I was dropping off presents to friends. Did I stay,? Yes, but only for short, outdoor, social distanced, safe visits with masks handy. I knew I would be outside for a little bit, so I dressed for the weather.. It was just below freezing, so I was wearing a nice snuggly sweater & with my coat on I was nice & cozy outside..

After I got home, after a long day, and a long day on Christmas Day aswell, I was just exhausted. I took off my jeans and lay down for a nap.

I woke 1½hr later, nauseous & with a headache. Normally this is just my body telling me that I’m hungry because I haven’t eaten a lot during the day. Had a snack but halfway through, realized I was feeling flushed & warm.. A peek in the mirror told me what was going on.. My face was bright red..

I was still wearing my sweater! In my defense, it was a brand new sweater that I had never worn before and was not aware of how deceptively warm it is.. So I yanked off the sweater & my skin underneath was pink from the warmth..

Went to hop in the shower to warm up. My regular ‘hot’ setting I use for showers wasn’t the hot hot it normally felt like, but cooler. Since I wasn’t feeling temperatures like I should be, I set the water a smidge cooler before I hopped in… Bit by bit I turned the dial slowly down to cooler temperatures to slowly cool my body down. It took 20-30 minutes to start feeling like I was a normal temperature.. My colour was almost back to normal when the time I was all dried off.. After my shower, I simply crawled into bed to sleep it off…

I woke up a few hours later, without the nausea. So I ended up finally taking my nighttime meds because I didn’t want to risk taking them earlier and just chucking them up which is what I figured would happen..

The headache finally abetited a few hours later with some Excedrin…

Note: You can also get heatstroke from wearing too many layers outside & not taking them off as you warm up like when skiing..

Yes Virginia, You Can get Heatstroke in Winter

So, yes Virginia, There is a Santa Claus, it’s not a myth . & Yes, Virginia, You can get Heatstroke in the Winter. Be careful

Happy 50th, Laura.

November 2, 2020

Today, Laura would have been 50 years old.

For those who don’t know the backstory, I’ve always called Laura my sister. Technically, she was my sister-in-law but I have known her since I was 12 or 13. We were also friends in our own right through soccer & field hockey.

Laura was a Toronto police officer recently returned from maternity leave. While responding to an emergency burglary call for an elderly woman, her vehicle was hit by a civilian. Her police cruiser spun, throwing her partner from the vehicle but wrapping her around a tree. The civilian was never charged with anything, not even failing to yield to the emergency vehicle.

Laura with Paige, only hours old.

A new mother, a caring sister, a supportive daughter, a good friend, a loving wife and a great police officer, her life was tragically cut short and we miss her. .

F.A.S.T. on World Stroke Day

October 29, 2020

This year World Stroke Day is today on Thursday October 29th. this is one of those medical conditions that I do not have but it’s still near and dear to my heart. One of my closest friends had a series of small strokes several years ago. If they hadn’t been dealt with they could have led to a major stroke which could have left us without him. He is doing relatively well, but still does still have some lingering residual effects from his strokes.

So given that today is World Stroke Day I thought it would be a good idea to reinforce the signs of a stroke – F.A.S.T.

Act F.A.S.T
Recognize the signs of stroke

F – Face. During a Stoke, commonly, the person will loose muscular function on one side of the body. This is easily seen in the face as it tends to droop. Ask the person to smile. If the normal smile does not immerge or is very lax, this is a sign of a stroke

A – Arms. Again, with muscular function impaired, one side of the body is significantly weaker. It the person is unable to raise both arms to the same hight easily, this is a sign of a stroke.

S – Speech. Slurred speech, the ability to talk is a result of the weakened musculature in the face. The inability to use correct words or understand others around is disconcerting. Both of these situations are signs of a stroke.

T – Time. Time to call 911. Every second counts with Simone having stroke. If they are unable to relieve the pressure, permanent damage, serious permanent damage, even death can occur. So, even if you are not sure, better safe than sorry.
