Yes, Virginia, You Can Get Heatstroke in the Winter

December 29, 2020
Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus.

Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus.. While he is not a physical.person, but an ideology of a sort, he still exists as the Spirit or intention of Christmas.. And oddly enough so does heatstroke in the winter, the day after Christmas. Neither is a myth.

On Boxing Day (December 26th here in Canada) I was dropping off presents to friends. Did I stay,? Yes, but only for short, outdoor, social distanced, safe visits with masks handy. I knew I would be outside for a little bit, so I dressed for the weather.. It was just below freezing, so I was wearing a nice snuggly sweater & with my coat on I was nice & cozy outside..

After I got home, after a long day, and a long day on Christmas Day aswell, I was just exhausted. I took off my jeans and lay down for a nap.

I woke 1½hr later, nauseous & with a headache. Normally this is just my body telling me that I’m hungry because I haven’t eaten a lot during the day. Had a snack but halfway through, realized I was feeling flushed & warm.. A peek in the mirror told me what was going on.. My face was bright red..

I was still wearing my sweater! In my defense, it was a brand new sweater that I had never worn before and was not aware of how deceptively warm it is.. So I yanked off the sweater & my skin underneath was pink from the warmth..

Went to hop in the shower to warm up. My regular ‘hot’ setting I use for showers wasn’t the hot hot it normally felt like, but cooler. Since I wasn’t feeling temperatures like I should be, I set the water a smidge cooler before I hopped in… Bit by bit I turned the dial slowly down to cooler temperatures to slowly cool my body down. It took 20-30 minutes to start feeling like I was a normal temperature.. My colour was almost back to normal when the time I was all dried off.. After my shower, I simply crawled into bed to sleep it off…

I woke up a few hours later, without the nausea. So I ended up finally taking my nighttime meds because I didn’t want to risk taking them earlier and just chucking them up which is what I figured would happen..

The headache finally abetited a few hours later with some Excedrin…

Note: You can also get heatstroke from wearing too many layers outside & not taking them off as you warm up like when skiing..

More Non-Scale Victories!

October 23, 2020

Wearing a Belt. I’m 7 notches shorter on my belt, not even a 3x belt, but a 2x belt that has notches all the way around. & I can wear my smaller belts again!

Fit Old Smaller Clothes. I’m talking fittung into clothing from high school. I pulled out some of my old clothes I had from my marksman competition days when I shot on the Junior Regional & provincial teams in 1999-91. I was stunned to find they actually fit! And one item was too big!!

Moving Like A Normal Person.. It surprising how many things plus people do differently than how ‘normal’ sized people do. For example, I don’t have to tie my shoe from the side cuz the fat is in the way and I can do more yoga poses properly cuz the roll on my tummy stopped me from folding.

Shrinking Fingers. I’ve had to replace rings in a size 6, or wear rings I had in highschool.. Anyone interested in size 7 or 8 rings? Stirling silver or costume..

Increased Flexibility. My body moves differently, better.. I can stretch further than I used to. Maybe one day I will be able to do the splits. Lol.

Decreased Appetite.. It’s not always to the same amount. I used to be able to eat a medium 8 skice pizza plus wings & Cheesey bread but now I’m only interested in 2-3 pieces.. But the other night I could only eat half a small potato & half of a small steak. But also, the other day, I bought a 12″ sub & ate the whole thing plus cookies, but it took a while. Instead of 15 minutes, I took 2 hours to enjoy my dinner. So, yes, there are variations, but generally, I have about 1/3rd of the appetite I used to have.

Can’t Grab My Tummy Roll. Growing up, pants & jeans were made in more of a low-rise style, so I always have worn my clothes just able my hips, so that is where my belt sits. Sinching in my waist repeatedly over the years has resulting into 2 rolls in my stomach, one above my waist, one below. I can’t quite grab my lower tummy roll much & what I can grab is almost entirely loose skin. Not Fat.

I Can See My Scar! 20 I had a laparotomy in my incision went from hip to hip I’m up towards my belly button. While I can still see the scar from the vertical incision, I haven’t been able to see the horizontal incision for over a decade. This is because I was unable to move the roll of fat far enough to be able to see around it to see the scar. I was drying off the other day and noticed cuz of the lax I was able to move the roll much more easily. I took a peek to see if I could see & I can.. & that scar has faded nicely.

I can do more. I’ve noticed that I am physically able to do more.. Yes I have fibro & that limits stuff, but I’m able to do things I couldn’t before. Like make my bed. It’s in a corner to difficult to access the far side to make the bed, but I’m having not problems getting those sheets on anymore.

For those on your own weight-loss journey, what Non-Scale Victories have you had?

My Weight Loss Journey

July 7, 2020
I’ve always been a bit on the bigger side, a little chubby… I was 120lbs starting junior high, finished high school at 180lb, spent my 20s near 220-230lb.. About 15 years ago, I joined weight watchers with my mom and my weight had maxed out at 275lb. I lost almost 60lb on that program. But after that, my lifestyle completely changed and it turns out, not in a good way. So finally about 8-10 years ago, I stepped on the scale weighing a whopping 303lb.

I did not like that number, but wasn’t really in a position to do much about it. Between finances & available services & programs there’s not much I could do. So I started just eating less.. In the summer, we would walk over to the community pool and I would swim – not laps really, but just treading water.. it took a few years, but I lost about 25 lb in 4-5 years with that schedule. Very slow progress, but progress nonetheless.

At that point I moved out of the city, back near my family. My rent included membership to the local YMCA gym. I didn’t figure I’d be using the actual gym much, but I knew I’d use the hot tub. So, I used the hot tub 5-6 days of the week. I then started doing a yoga class at the gym for about a year until the instructor switched times. Then about 2 years ago,, my mom invited me to join her aquafit class..I started doing not much more than bouncing around in the water. But it was fun, so I kept coming back..

At this same time, my eating habits got better. While I still ate junk food, it was less often, and I was eating at least one good healthy & nutritious meal a day. That’s much better than before where fast food was the norm and serving sizes were twice what they shood be.

In the Aquafit, I was slowly working with increased intensity in the class… I started going to a second class later in the week. . The weight started coming off faster.

I tried to add jogging into the mix, but I just couldn’t get into it mentally, not on the ground and my lungs could not handle the cardio What I did do, I would run laps in the water. This worked the muscles but the cardio wasn’t as strong as I was unable to keep my breath while jogging .

I was improving. My health was getting better, pain levels went down (no, not gone, unfortunately), and my clothing started to get looser and looser.

I had items in a size 26 in my closet. I was swimming in those.most of my clothing was a 3X.. and I started to swim in those.

I feel better.. I feel healthier and happier. I actually feel like myself again.

Where do I stand now? I am a size 16, currently weighing in at 207lb, as of my last weigh in. a total loss of 97 lb so far.

Final goal? 180lb.
